Fulcrum

One finger, resting on a nearby tooth, is the difference between a controlled polish and a cup skating across the gingiva. The exam asks about it constantly.

1What & why

One planted finger buys total control.

A fulcrum is your finger rest — usually the ring finger of your working hand planted on a stable tooth surface near the tooth being polished. It converts your whole arm's wobble into a controlled pivot.

Why the exam cares: the fulcrum provides stability and control, protects the patient if they move suddenly, reduces operator fatigue, and keeps the cup from skating into soft tissue.

The rest is the technique. Three fingers drive the handpiece and a fourth is planted on firm tooth structure, turning arm movement into a controlled pivot. Here the rest is taken on the opposing arch — the same-arch rest nearest the working tooth is the first choice, but any tooth rest beats a soft-tissue one.
3Make it stick
Grip like a pen, land like a tripod.

The handpiece is held in a pen grasp — thumb, index, middle. The ring finger is the tripod's third leg. Pen grasp + fulcrum = fine motor control; fist grip + no rest = the cup lurching into the gingiva the moment the patient flinches.
